Nothing excites a drummer more than buying his first ever drum set. Right? When I first developed interest in playing drums, I remember that single wooden piece I used to beat all day long and months later I was ready to buy my first ever drum kit.
As exciting it was for me, it was pretty frustrating as well because there were hundreds of kits available on the market and I was confused as which one to buy.
Not bragging but it actually took a month of research before I finally bought that ‘perfect’ kit.
Sounds familiar…does it?

With the DW Design Series Drum Set you will get three product variants that share the same module but come with different pad configurations. It is the highest-ranking model, equipped with the proven bass drum pad and the snare drum pad with three trigger zones, has a retail price of just $1500, well above the most affordable model of its kind, but also well below comparable sets from its competitors.
DW has been broadly positioned for years in the upper entry-level to mid-price segment with many of its series. Each series has one sound module and three different equipment variants.
Compared to the other module, it is noticeable that this model has no display – a fact that probably causes frowning not only on the reader but also on the author of these lines, since one wonders how a relatively complex device like DW without optical display should be adequately operated.
Despite all the progress that electronic drums have made in recent years…Is the main problem the drummer with drum sets have the missing feeling? That although they sound incredible (sometimes even better than a real one)
It is impossible to compare the feeling of a real acoustic drum and cymbals with those of mesh heads and rubber cymbals.
This set reaches a quality level where the “feeling” is not only acceptable, but you can even enjoy playing.
And DW drum sets are quite famous to entertain both the player and the listener.
Here are a few other reasons to choose this kit:
First… there is a noticeable difference in the tension between the snare and the toms. Something all drummers appreciate.
Then… next to a real hi-hat stand, it also has a real snare drum stand, which allows much faster movements than typical rackmount snares.
Then… it has an impressive KB-100-foot machine. At first glance it is clear that this is the most realistic kick pad we have seen so far. And it’s even big enough for a double-footer.
In addition, it has ultra-realistic hi-hat sensors that actually measure the pressure you exert in the closed position and adjust the sound/pitch accordingly.
Last but not least… there is the optional hardware, which abandons the standard e-drum rack design and offers the kind of hardware that also uses acoustic drums.
- Exceptional quality for just a fraction of price
- HVT shells which are not sturdy but help produce warmer and open tone
- Low-mass mini turret lugs
- MAG throw-off for precise and stable snare tension
- No drawbacks
Instead of the previous version of Gretsch which ruled the market up to now, the current budget set of the American manufacturer was christened with the much more distinctive name “New Renown”. Gretsch New Renown Drum Kit is known to be an explosive, but fortunately it does not require the explosive ordnance clearance service to operate this explosive kit.
The eight-piece complete set includes, in addition to the well-known module, which has only been renamed for the Kit now comes in Satin black, cherry burst, blue metal and silver oyster pearl along with five drum pads, three cymbal pads, Hi Hat controller, foot pedal and of course the rack for mounting the components.
The Gretsch New Renown Drum Kit is now well stocked in the $1000+ price class, since especially beginners who are not sure whether they will stay with the instrument for the long term are reluctant to invest large sums in it.
Every manufacturer is represented in this segment, be it the established brands such as Roland and Yamaha or the “No Name” manufacturers and private labels of the major music stores. Ludwig Junior Outfit is among one of the first manufacturers of electronic musical instruments whose products were affordable for normal home studios.
And this tradition continues to this day…With the surprisingly cheap models on the market.
It’s the cheapest drum kit on this list, but you can’t tell (as you can see in the pictures).
Compared to some other models on the list, the Mesh Snare is missing, which can be a bigger or a smaller loss depending on your playing style. Mesh snares are definitely an advantage for a more filigree snare game.
But with this you get the better hardware: the solid aluminum frame and the improved kick pads.
For more filigree kick drum play, a real foot machine with pad is better than an electronic pedal, as used in this kit

- Comes with the throne, hardware and everything else you need to start playing it right out of the box

- 16” bass drum included which nicely mounts 8” and 10” toms for that extra music punch at home
- Too small for intermediates and professionals
Drum Kits Buying Guide
In recent years, there has been a range of drums more and more successful on the market, at ever more affordable costs. We will try to enlighten you so that you can find a first drum in accordance with your budget, but especially, with your expectations.
Opting for a drum set drum set will always be the ideal choice to rediscover real gaming sensations. However, all the elements must be combined to make the most of your instrument, otherwise your dream will turn into a nightmare. The drum kit is a very noisy and bulky instrument.
If you do not live in a detached house, or do not have access to an isolated room (basement, basement, soundproof room…) or other place to accommodate noise, it is advisable to turn instead to an electronic drum, under penalty of not being able to practice in good conditions and see your progress slow down at the same time as your motivation falls.
Today, complete drum kits are available from $200. These prices can go up to several thousand dollars for the most sophisticated models or/and built in more noble materials.
It is not necessary to start with a high-end kit, even if it would not harm your progress, quite the contrary, but to start without ruining yourself, you can concentrate on the first price bands namely kits under $1000.
For those with a very tight budget, the choice will initially be for a complete entry-level package ranging from $300 to $400, such as Mapex drums for example. Complete drum packs generally consist of a set of 5 drums, accessories, and cymbals.
The quality of the set makes it possible to make the hand but with a robustness just sufficient because these kits badly support assemblies and disassembles with repetition.
The good value for money will be between $500 and $700, where we will find sets distributed by renowned brands such as Pearl, Tama or Yamaha which, thanks to their experience and know-how, offer products that perfectly meet the requirements of the beginner drummer.
PEARL Forum, TAMA Imperial Star and YAMAHA Gig maker drums are good examples. Again the sets are composed of a kit of 5 drums in fusion, of different diameters (20, 10, 12 and 14 inches’ diameter as well as a snare drum), standard (22, 12, 13 and 16 inches’ diameter as well as a snare drum), see jazz or junior with 18 bass drum.
The size of the drums will be chosen according to the sound required but also the size of the musician.
For the youngest, we recommend a “Junior” or “Fusion” model, depending on their size, to keep a certain comfort of play behind their drum.
The size of your kit is very crucial because not all players want the same type of drum kits. For example, if you love playing jazz, choosing a drum set with two large bass drums and seven toms would be foolish.
However, if your style is metal god, perhaps something more than 18” bass drum with complementing small toms would be a good decision. Most of the drum sets now a days come in packs of four or five usually. You always have the option of adding additional drums later on.
The best combination is usually an 18” or 20” bass drum with 10” and 14” toms along with 14” snare. This is considered as the best setup as it isn’t limited to any particular music style.
Another very popular yet an old set combination includes 10”, 12” and 14” toms with a 22” kick drum and a 14” drum snare. This is known as the fusion setup and it is designed mainly to provide a big, deep bass with a highly controlled tom sound which adds that extra punch to the sound.
The ride cymbals are accompanying cymbals that give rhythm. They give a light and crystalline sound. The diameter of the ride cymbals varies from 17 to 24 inches, however the SABIAN brand offered small models of about 10 inches in diameter.
Wrinkle cymbals are generally the largest and thickest cymbals of the acoustic drum set. They can be drilled to attach rivets or chains. This allows a more important vibration that fills the space when the drummer accompanies a slow blues or a jazz ballad for example. See the ride cymbals.
Popular with rock drummers, crash cymbals are accent cymbals that punctuate music with a short, loud sound. Their diameter varies between 12 and 20 inches. See the crash cymbals.
The hi-hat cymbals
Also known as hi-hat cymbals or Charleston cymbals, “hi-hat” cymbals produce a brief and powerful sound that keeps the rhythm of the music. Their diameter varies between 13 and 15 inches. See the hi-hat cymbals.
More specific, the “splash” cymbals are effect cymbals that accentuate the music. They produce a short and syncopated sound. There are three different sizes (6, 8 and 10 inches in diameter). See the splash cymbals.
The China cymbals
Also called Chinese cymbals or whistling cymbals, these very fine cymbals produce the sound of a gong with a low tone that gives a metallic note to the music. Their diameter varies from 16 to 22 inches, sometimes even up to 24 inches in diameter. There are also mini-china less than 16 inches in diameter. They have traditionally curved edges and have an explosive attack, tearing and possessing very few harmonics, the fall after the attack being immediate. see cymbals china
Cymbals in a pack
They usually include a hi hat, a ride and a crash or two. Several product ranges are available for less than 400€. On the video above, The Intersphere play the same song with different Sabian cymbal sets. Listen to the difference!
Types of crates
A classic drum set consists of five parts: a bass drum, two mounted toms, a tom on the ground and a snare drum. Once you have this basic drum set, you can add other toms, several bass drums or simply add a chalerston like on the jazz drum set. The addition of tambourines or cymbals will depend on the music you want to perform and the different sounds you want to play: each type of drum is slightly different and delivers a sound of its own.
The bass drum
The bass drum is placed directly on the ground and produces a deep, heavy sound. The standard size of a bass drum is 22 inches in diameter*, but there are models ranging from 16 to 28 inches. Standing on the ground, the bass drum hits itself with a foot pedal. With a double drum pedal, you can simulate the sound of two bass drums simultaneously. There are large drum risers for smaller drums like the Manu Katché jazz drum kit from Yamaha, equipped with an 18-inch diameter bass drum.
A second bass drum or double bass drum pedal can be added to your acoustic drum kit. Generally, this drum composition makes it possible to make syncopated figures, a technique widely used for metal music and hard rock music.
Generally, there are 2 or 3 different types of toms.
Mounted toms: single or double skin, they have an adjustable attachment that can be attached to a bass drum. Standard sizes range from 10 to 13 inches*.
. The toms on the ground: generally, to the right of the snare drum. Their size varies between 12 and 18 inches*.
. The medium tom: also called medium tom, it is placed above the bass drum.
. The tom alto: also called high tom or small tom, it is placed above the bass drum.
. The bass tom: generally, on three feet, it is the tom with the lowest sound.
. Other toms of different diameters and various small percussions can complete the drums: piccolo toms (small and fine), rototoms (with a very dry sound), toms’ rockets (also called octobans), bells, chimes, a tam-tam or a set of gongs.
